INCI: Gaultheria Procumbens Leaf Oil
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. It consists of over 98% of the ester methyl salicylate.
It has an intensely aromatic, sweet-woody and medicinal fragrance. Wintergreen essential oil is used in cosmetic products as a perfume component for cassia, chypre, tobacco and fantasy notes, as a soap perfume and flavouring agent for toothpaste, mouthwash and other oral care products.
Undesirable effects and contraindications:
Wintergreen should be used with caution by people who have an allergy or intolerance to salicylates and by asthmatics. Wintergreen essential oil is also not suitable during pregnancy, for small children or epileptics.
As wintergreen oil can have an irritating effect on the skin in high concentrations, we recommend that you consult an aromatherapist/aroma counsellor before using it, or that you read the literature carefully.
