Pearlescent pigments, also known as coloured mica, are natural mineral-based inorganic pigments that can be used to colour a variety of cosmetic products such as lipsticks, eye shadows, blushes, but also for soap. They consist of mica and titanium dioxide coated with matte pigments. They are available in a variety of particle sizes, with the particle size determining the effect, which can range from soft focus to glitter. The most common particle size is 10-60µm.

When formulating an M&P soap with a clear base, we recommend using 1% mica. This percentage gives a pale shimmering effect to a clear base.
For CP soap or M&P with a white base, we always recommend starting with 3% and then, if you want a deeper shade, increasing to 5%, always calculated by weight.
Before adding the pigment to the soap, it is always best to disperse it with either alcohol or one of the carrier oils used in the formulation.
