INCI: Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract

Magnolia Bark Extract 98% is composed of the pharmacologically active components magnolol and honokiol. The extract has a strong antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Used in acne treatment, Magnolia Extract is very effective against acne-causing germs without irritating the skin. As it has a much higher antioxidant effect than alpha-tocopherol, it is perfect for sun protection products. Oxidation products are neutralised and resulting skin damage is prevented.
In fats and oils it helps as a booster - similar to vitamin C palmitate - to extend the effect of mixed tocopherols and thus the shelf life of the fat/oil.
Magnolia Bark Extract has a very good effect against bacteria, yeasts and fungi even at very low dosages. It works particularly well in combination with Pentylene Glycol natural and Glyceryl Caprylate (GMCY).
Magnolia Bark Extract is hydroscopic and should be protected against moisture.

Processing Tip:
If you want to use Magnolia Extract for its antimicrobial properties and thus for product protection, you must use a solubiliser such as Pentylene Glycol Natural. Only then can it show its full antimicrobial potential.
Dissolve Magnolia Bark Extract in Pentylene Glycol Natural and add it to the oil phase before emulsifying.

Use concentration:
0.05% as an active ingredient against acne
0.2 - 0.3% as an antimicrobial enhancer
